Shahidan wants Zahid disciplined over Anwar letter, teases post-Raya ‘secrets’

Fresh from his sacking as Perlis Umno chief, Shahidan Kassim tonight urged the party to take disciplinary action against president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for making overtures in support of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

In a surprise press conference, he stressed that those who violated the party’s “no Anwar, no DAP, no PKR” stance needed to face the music.

He alleged that Zahid had gone against that decision in two instances.

“The party’s disciplinary board can’t just keep quiet, they must take action against those who violate the party’s stand like the ‘no Anwar, no DAP, no PKR’ decision.

“We found that there was a letter written by the president (Zahid) to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. And this was witnessed by (Pekan MP) Najib Abdul Razak. We kept quiet about this because we wanted to maintain harmonious political relations.

“Today, I want to bring up this letter because it violated the party’s decision,” he said.

This was in reference to an alleged letter signed by Zahid in October last year, allegedly pledging support for Anwar.

Zahid's office claimed the letter is fake, but former Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa said otherwise.

According to Shahidan, the second instance was an audio recording allegedly of a phone conversation between Zahid and Anwar shortly after the recent Umno general assembly.

Both politicians have denied involvement in the clip.

“I think the audio shows there was a plan to support Anwar. Therefore, the disciplinary committee needs to take action over the audio,” he said.

During the press conference, Shahidan teased he had more information up his sleeve and hinted that there had been a recent but unsuccessful "signature drive" for Anwar in Parliament.

“That, I think, we can talk about after (Hari) Raya. Because it is the fasting month now and it is not good (to say such things).

“I actually know a lot of things but I have been keeping (quiet) to maintain the harmony of the party,” he said.

Shahidan also pushed for party polls to be held in June, in order to solve a leadership crisis in Umno.

On his sacking as Perlis Umno chief, Shahidan said this was Zahid's prerogative as party president and that he would comply.

The move to axe Shahidan comes ahead of a supreme council meeting that is expected to debate several of the issues raised by the Arau MP.

Shahidan had previously been able to attend supreme council meetings as a state Umno chief - as he was not elected to the council.

With his removal, his replacement Azlan Man will be attending tomorrow's meeting instead. - Mkini
