Umno and BN have never restricted any young leaders to contest in the 15th general election (GE15), said Umno election director Tajuddin Abdul Rahman.
He said several leaders had been appointed and given the trust to become menteri besar or minister at a young age and rejuvenation is an ongoing process in the party.
“Former Malacca chief minister Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik, former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Mohd Isa Abdul Samad, former Pahang menteri besar Najib Abdul Razak and former Perak menteri besar Ramli Ngah Talib, were all aged between 20 and 40 when they were appointed.”
He said this to reporters after attending the presentation of the TAJ International College smart partnership certificate to seven government agencies in Ipoh today.
Tajuddin was asked to comment on the NGOs' demand for improvement in the country’s democratic practice including limiting the age of parliamentary candidates to below 65 years.
The Pasir Salak MP, however, said there was a need for a combination of young and experienced leaders to govern the country.
“We always give opportunities to young people who have physical and mental advantages but they also have disadvantages in terms of experience when compared to seasoned politicians,” he said.
