Khalid: How many Malays have left Selangor for Kelantan?

PARLIAMENT | Khalid Samad (Harapan-Shah Alam) has slammed the federal government for pushing race and religious rhetoric instead of focusing on good governance.

“How many Malays have moved from Selangor to Kelantan or Terengganu for apparently being so Islamic? Or moving to Malacca or Johor which are under Umno’s control?

“If there are more of them moving away from those states to Selangor than those moving from Selangor to those states, I rest my case,” he said during the debate on Budget 2022 in Parliament today.

Khalid (above) said those behind the race and religious rhetoric have nothing to bring forward except lies and rumours to scare the Malay-Muslim population, making them a community that fears its own shadow.

The Shah Alam MP also took a jab at the Keluarga Malaysia (Malaysian Family) concept pushed by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and his government.

“Don’t just push for Keluarga Malaysia when you’re in government, (and) fan the racial fire willfully when you are in the opposition.

“I was most disappointed in the issue of firefighter (Muhammad) Adib (Mohd Kassim)'s death.

“When all the agencies pointed to no evidence proving that he was murdered, the Harapan government was accused of championing the non-Muslims and protecting the murderer of a Malay.

“Where was the slogan Keluarga Malaysia during that time?” Khalid asked.

He pointed out that while there was so much focus on finding any evidence of murder in Adib’s case, no effort was made in investigating those dying in police custody.

The racial composition of those dying in police custody has sparked public concern after records show the victims were mostly ethnic Indians.

“The numbers have reached dozens, these people were supposed to be under police’s care, safe from abuse and persecution, not dying under the government's watch.

“You don’t care. Maybe because most of them aren’t Malays, maybe because most of them are Indians, because many of them are considered thugs,” Khalid said.

He criticised the government for failing to uphold a spirit of good governance, and for allegedly focusing on racial and religious dogma while protecting those who are corrupt.

He described the government as untrustworthy and accused it of starting a culture of "bribing MPs" with ministerial positions, yet claiming it is formed by parties that uphold Islamic values.

“Because corruption and wastage are not hudud issues, so it's not as important as the issues of Timah and alcohol sales which they always champion, even though alcohol is well regulated and its sale is only to non-Muslims.

“These deviant Islamic understandings see the purchase of Mercedes vehicles for their state excos (as alright), because wastage is not under hudud,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat.

Umno duo aren’t frogs

On the issue of his coalition Harapan accepting two Umno defectors who caused the recent collapse of the Malacca state government, Khalid defended the decision.

“There are some who said Harapan is the same as Perikatan Nasional after taking in two frogs. Sorry, these two aren’t frogs, they were fired by Umno for not supporting the chief minister they appointed.

“They didn’t hop, frogs are the ones that hopped,” he said, believed to be referring to those who switched their party allegiance on their own will. - Mkini
