SOP violation: DAP man denies wrongdoing, points to Rauf and Najib

MALACCA POLLS | DAP's Kota Laksamana candidate Low Chee Leong was today questioned by police for allegedly violating the standard operating procedure (SOP) against Covid-19.

After giving his statement at the Malacca district police headquarters, Low held a press conference at the Kota Laksamana Pakatan Harapan election operations centre to deny wrongdoing.

Instead, he held up photographs of BN's entourage at the Tanjung Bidara nomination yesterday.

“I would like to stress that no SOPs were broken yesterday, by me or my party.

“I would like to clarify that during nomination day, I had attended with a proposer and a seconder, unlike what was done by the opposing side," he told the press conference as he held up the pictures.

He said police took issue with his supporters outside the nomination centre.

The Election Commission and Health Ministry have banned all gatherings due to Covid-19.

Low is being investigated under Section 269 of the Penal Code which concerns a negligent act that is likely to spread infection of any disease dangerous to life which carries a jail term of up to six months or a fine or both.

He is also being probed under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988.

Low maintained that he has always complied with the SOP.

Yesterday, Malacca Umno chief Ab Rauf Yusoh turned up at the Tanjung Bidara nomination centre with around 20 people, including former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Police later asked Ab Rauf's supporters to disperse.

The 12-day campaign for the Malacca polls began yesterday.

However, all gatherings, door-to-door or face-to-face campaigning have been banned due to the pandemic.

The restrictions are significantly tougher compared to the Sabah polls last year, which sparked a new wave of Covid-19 that spread across the nation.

More than 29,000 lives have been lost to the disease.

Low will face BN's Benjamin Low Chin Hong and Perikatan Nasional's (PN) Fong Khai Ling for the Kota Laksamana seat.

In Tanjung Bidara, Ab Rauf will face PN's Mas Ermieyati Samsudin and Harapan's Zainal Hassan.

Ab Rauf is a new face for the seat which is a BN stronghold and the constituency has been won by Umno in all elections.  - Mkini
