Rauf to debut in BN stronghold for Malacca polls - report

Malacca Umno chief Ab Rauf Yusoh, a key figure who guided incumbent chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali to thwart an attempted coup against the Umno-Bersatu state government, is set to make his electoral debut.

Utusan Malaysia reported that Rauf is expected to be fielded in Tanjung Bidara for the forthcoming Nov 20 state election.

This is considered BN's safest seat in the state.

In GE14, Umno had won 58.15 percent of the votes in Tanjung Bidara, despite the strong anti-establishment sentiment at the time.

This win represented BN's strongest margin in the state.

Idris Haron, the sacked Umno leader who perpetrated the failed coup, had repeatedly accused Rauf (above) of pulling the strings behind Sulaiman.

Rauf has denied this claim.

The former state assembly speaker did indeed play a prominent role during the recent political crisis, including personally announcing the dissolution of the Malacca state assembly.

This was even though it was Sulaiman who had sought consent from state governor Mohd Ali Rustam.

BN is set to announce its full line-up of candidates tomorrow (Nov 6), two days before the Nov 8 nomination day.

More new faces?

Meanwhile, Utusan reported on a list of other potential candidates, many of them new faces.

These include Tangga Batu Umno chief Mohamad Ali Mohamad (Pantai Kundor), Umno supreme council member Khaidhirah Abu Zahar (Rim) and Malacca Umno Youth vice-chief Akmal Salleh (Merlimau).

Also on the supposed list are Umno supreme council member Rais Yasin (Paya Rumput), Hang Tuah Jaya Umno chief Ridhwan Ali (Pengkalan Batu), Hang Tuah Jaya Umno deputy chief Hasnoor Sidang Husin (Bukit Katil), Kota Melaka Umno chief Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman (Telok Mas) and Tangga Batu Umno exco member Mohd Fasarul Md Isa (Sungai Udang).

Incumbents Sulaiman (Lendu), Rahmad Mariman (Molek) and Zaidi Atan (Serkam) are set to be retained.

Incumbents Hasan Rahman and Abdul Ghafar Atan are set to be dropped from contesting in Jasin and Alor Gajah respectively. - Mkini
