Shah Alam Indahria Apartment deemed unsafe after floods, residents evacuated

Residents at Indahria Apartment in Batu Tiga, Shah Alam have been asked to evacuate due to concerns over the building’s structural integrity after major floods struck the area last weekend.

Batu Tiga assemblyperson Rodziah Ismail confirmed this with Malaysiakini today, saying the residents were evacuated to temporary shelters on Dec 19 (Sunday).

“Before this, a few years, there was an issue with the building and the parking lot as it is next to a riverbank.

“During the flood, the situation was getting worse… we found out one of the pillars (of the building) is cracked.

“We do not want to take the risk, so we asked the residents to evacuate,” Rodziah told Malaysiakini.

The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) will survey the building and come up with a report on whether the apartment is safe for the residents to return to, she said.

She added that she had asked the city council to complete this matter within two weeks.

The Indahria Apartment has been plagued by structural integrity problems for many years, with residents expressing concern over the sinking ground at the apartment’s parking lot as early as 2013.

The issue was even raised in a written reply in the Selangor state assembly in 2016.

The state government had then said it was unable to resolve the issue of cracks in the building as it is located on private property and is managed by a joint management body.

It explained that the MBSA had sent a letter in early 2013 to the developer to resolve the structural problems at the building within two weeks.

However, the developer had refused to take responsibility for the case.

In March this year, Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari had also visited the apartment and given a briefing on the sinking issues there.

At the time, he had said that the state government and the MBSA would take action to resolve the issues. - Mkini
