PETALING JAYA: Kelab Shah Alam Selangor says the decision to ban alcohol at its premises was made by its general committee and not the Selangor state secretary.
In a statement today, general manager Mohamed Shafieek Sultan Mohammad clarified that the decision was made after a majority of its general committee members decided on it.
“The decision to ban the sale and consumption of alcohol was made by the majority of the general committee members of the club and not the state secretary as reported,” he said.
The new rule became effective from Feb 12. Members and guests are also not permitted to bring alcohol into the premises.
It was previously reported that the alcohol ban was enforced in compliance with instructions from the Selangor state secretary’s office.
Since news of the ban broke, some of the club’s most senior members said that they were willing to give up their membership should the club’s ban on alcohol remain.
“Why can’t the management consider reducing the number of hours to keep the bar open? As it is now, we are only allowed to drink upstairs.
“Just shorten the hours to show this is a club for all and not just teetotallers,” said one member.
“We hope the decision will be reconsidered,” he added.
Stressing that he was disappointed with the ban, another member noted that the club had always been multiracial, with members from all walks of life playing sports and socialising with each other.
This decision comes hot on the heels of a similar ban on alcohol consumption at the Ayer Keroh Country Club in Melaka following instructions from the state government last December. - FMT
