PAGOH: Perikatan Nasional (PN) leaders will meet tomorrow to determine its prospective candidate to be nominated as menteri besar should the coalition win the Johor state elections on March 12.

PN secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said several people have been identified and the selected person would be announced soon.

“We will be having a meeting tomorrow, where we will decide on the best candidate to be nominated as Johor menteri besar,” Hamzah told reporters after a walkabout in Pagoh town, Bernama reported.

Hamzah said there are certain criteria to select a menteri besar. “The right person must be capable of running the state government and have the necessary experience with a special emphasis on their integrity as well,” he said.

Asked whether the candidate would come from Bersatu, he said that would be decided by the PN Supreme Council.

Two politicians from Bersatu have served as menteri besar in the Pakatan Harapan state governments from 2018 to 2020.

Osman Sapian served for a year but fell from favour and resigned in April 2019 amid disagreements with then prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad. He died in October last year.

After Osman’s resignation, Sahruddin Jamal became menteri besar from April 2019 until March 2020 when the Pakatan Harapan government collapsed.

On PN’s progress in the elections campaign which entered its seventh day, Hamzah, who is PN Johor state elections director, said things are proceeding smoothly and he hoped all parties would continue to comply with the stipulated SOPs.

PN which comprises Bersatu, PAS and Gerakan is contesting in all 56 seats of the Johor state legislative assembly.

The Election Commission has fixed polling day on March 12 and early voting on March 8. - FMT
