PETALING JAYA: The father of a university student suspected to have been electrocuted in a hostel room has accused Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) in Kedah of negligence.

R Sivakumar, 56, lodged a police report against the university today and called for a thorough investigation “to find out whether they properly maintained the building”.

His 21-year old daughter, S Vinosiny, was found dead on Sunday (May 21). Police have not confirmed the cause of death pending a post-mortem examination.

Sivakumar said in his report, filed in Klang, that the police must investigate whether the building has a certificate of fitness and whether the hostel was inspected after it was left vacant for two years due to the movement control order.”

Sivakumar’s lawyer M Manoharan said that the police report is part of the legal action the family is taking against the university.

“We want transparency in the matter as her death is mysterious. I believe UUM must be held liable for criminal negligence,” said Manoharan.

The university has assured the public that there would be no cover-up in Vinosiny’s death, which the police have classified as sudden death. Six officers from the Energy Commission and the police have visited the hostel to investigate the incident. - FMT
