GRS mulls adopting direct membership - Hajiji

Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) is mulling adopting direct membership as a new strategy to broaden its support base, according to its chairperson Hajiji Noor.

"I will discuss with (the GRS) leadership to come up with strategies and approaches so that more Sabahans can be brought into this noble struggle.

"Apart from direct membership, (we will also discuss) the formation of Wanita Wing, Youth Wing, and Student Wing," he said at the official launch of GRS in Kota Kinabalu today.

He said the coalition will also discuss setting up GRS Plus to bring together like-minded political parties and NGOs.

"It's enough that we are divided and we have been divided. Do not let our differences further widen the gap between us. With this realisation, GRS should bring unity and we should be open to all parties that share our agenda.

"The prerequisite for this cooperation must be based on common goals and adherence to the spirit, agenda, and core principles of GRS," said Hajiji, who is also the Sabah chief minister.

Currently, GRS comprises Bersatu, Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star), Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP), and the United Sabah National Organisation (Usno).

BN, which was part of GRS during its unofficial formation in September 2020 during the state election, made known earlier this year its intention not to join the coalition.

GRS rejected the membership applications of Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM) led by Melalap state assemblyperson Peter Anthony and Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS) led by former Foreign Minister Anifah Aman.

In the last state election, prior to the forming of the state government, Perikatan Nasional won 17 out of 73 seats, followed by BN (14) and PBS (seven). - Mkini
