Not practical to abolish PTPTN loans now, says Teo

KULAI : Pakatan Harapan (PH) has omitted student loan forgiveness as a campaign promise because abolition of PTPTN loans is not practical in view of the nation’s current finances, says former deputy education minister Teo Nie Ching.

She said the country’s total debt burden of RM1.4 trillion had deterred the coalition from promising the abolition of PTPTN loans.

PH has learnt a lesson not to over-promise,” she told FMT. “It is more practical not to abolish the PTPTN loan for now.”

However, if PH regains power, the government would look into ways of making it easier for those who owed PTPTN to settle their loans. “Once the economy stabilises and the government’s finances are better, then we may look into even abolishing PTPTN loans,” she added.

Teo is seeking re-election for a third term as MP for Kulai.

The PH manifesto calls for recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate for entry into public universities, and for allocating two posts of deputy prime minister. - FMT
