Unwilling to ditch myPPP, Kayveas eyes comeback as independent

M Kayveas and Iruthiyam Sebastiar Anthonisamy are contesting the general election as independent candidates in Perak.

BUNTONG: Former senator M Kayveas who is contesting the general election as an independent candidate, said he is doing so as he is unwilling to leave myPPP to join another.

Kayveas, who was also a former Taiping MP, is contesting the Ipoh Barat parliamentary seat while Iruthiyam Sebastiar Anthonisamy, said to be myPPP’s Perak chief, would contest the Buntong state seat.

When asked why he did not opt to join another political party, Kayveas said, “I cannot bring myself to join any other party”. He said he would never leave myPPP.

The party has been the subject of a rift since 2018, with Kayveas and Maglin Dennis D’Cruz both claiming to be president of the party. myPPP was degistered by the Registrar of Societies in 2019 and its current status remains in doubt.

Kayveas said he was contesting the elections to provide a check and balance on the main coalitions.

“Barisan Nasional, Perikatan Nasional, Pakatan Harapan and Pejuang have all said that after GE15, they can combine to form the government. Clearly, that means that the Rakyat no longer has a check and balance or an opposition any more.

“And this is not something that hasn’t happened, as we can see post GE14, this has happened,” Kayveas said.

He urged voters to consider the independent candidates as alternatives to the established political parties. More than 100 independents are contesting the 2022 general election. - FMT
