STATE POLLS | PAS assistant secretary-general Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman has accepted a debate invitation from PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli.
The debate will take place on Aug 9 - days before the six states go to the polls on Aug 12.
The debate venue along with further details has yet to be announced.
Syahir is a rising star in PAS. The 40-year-old is a first-time federal lawmaker representing Bachok and is best known for being PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s political secretary since 2018.
Previously, Rafizi, who is the economy minister, invited Bersatu supreme council member Azmin Ali and Kedah PAS chief Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor to a debate on "What is Perikatan Nasional's economic agenda for the rakyat?".
Rafizi had accused PN of not having any plan for the economy.
Incidentally, Syahir is a trained economist and has held positions in a major government-linked company (GLC).
Rafizi, after antagonising PN for days following the first two invites being turned down, thanked Syahir for his participation.
"I have been informed that Syahir has accepted my invitation to debate after receiving the green light from his superiors.
"I am grateful. A debate is an opportunity for parties to share their ideas and promises to the public," he tweeted today.
Meanwhile, Syahir said Rafizi would be tasked with choosing the moderator, format and venue.
"I am proposing (a different debate title) called 'Malaysia lebih baik' (A better Malaysia)," he said on his Facebook.
Sinar Harian offers to host debate
Malay daily Sinar Harian has volunteered to provide the venue for the debate between Rafizi and Syahir.
According to its chief editor Zamri Rambli, the debate can be held at the auditorium in Karangkraf complex in Shah Alam, which can accommodate up to 300 spectators.
"We also have the technical facility to allow the programme to be broadcast live for wider reach.
"National journalism laureate Johan Jaafar has also agreed to become the moderator for the debate," he reportedly said.
Sinar Harian, through its monthly 'Berani Semuka' (Dare to face) debate programme, has hosted various personalities.
They include former minister Mujahid Yusof Rawa and former Tabung Haji chairperson Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim, as well as Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abd Rahman and incumbent Seberang Jaya assemblyperson Dr Afif Bahardin, among others. - Mkini
