Fahmi's speech in mosque: Selangor cops launch probe

Selangor police have launched a probe into the circulation of pictures showing Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil giving a speech in a mosque.

According to state police chief Hussein Omar Khan, the probe is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

"We have obtained a recording of the speech and we will look into it for further investigation.

"We will give feedback and updates regarding the case in the near future," NST quoted Hussein telling reporters after attending an event in Serdang today.

A picture of Fahmi speaking at a mosque in Rawang went viral over the weekend, in what was claimed as a political speech.

Yesterday, Selangor Islamic Department (Jais) director Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad said they are investigating Fahmi over the incident, under Section 12 of the Selangor Syariah Crimes Enactment, on suspicion of insulting religious authorities.

It is worth noting that Selangor has a ban on politicking in mosques.

Explaining The 1975 controversy

Fahmi has denied politicking in the mosque and clarified that the mosque congregants had asked him to explain the controversy surrounding the British band The 1975.

“I had visited for zohor (afternoon) prayers... as I was there I was invited by the congregation to explain The 1975 issue.

“I did not touch on other matters at all,” the PKR leader tweeted two days ago, adding that congregants can vouch for him.

The 1975 stirred controversy when two male band members kissed on stage at the Good Vibes Festival, after criticising the government for its anti-LGBT policies.

This led to Fahmi pulling the plug on the music festival, while the band has been banned from performing in the country. - Mkini
