AGC still working on Hadi, Mahathir and Muhyiddin's 3R cases

More than a month has passed since police submitted the investigation papers (IPs) to the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) on Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.

However, there have been no updates since then regarding the allegations that the trio had touched on matters related to race, religion and royalty (3R).

"All IPs have been submitted to the AGC," Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain told Malaysiakini in a text when quizzed on the matter.

This was to ascertain if the deputy public prosecutor had instructed the police to gather additional information or evidence.

When Malaysiakini contacted the AGC for comment, a source said the matter is still “dalam tindakan” (being scrutinised).

Previously, it was reported that Mahathir was investigated over his alleged remarks against the royal institution.

On the other hand, Hadi was investigated under the Sedition Act and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act over a speech he made in Johor on Aug 26.

In the speech, the PAS leader questioned the Pardons Board, claiming that the manner in which pardons were granted did not adhere to Islamic teachings.

Last month, Hadi, 75, said he was prepared to spend time in prison instead of paying the fine.

‘Speech was twisted’

Meanwhile, police had opened two investigations against Muhyiddin over his remarks during the recent Simpang Jeram and Pulai by-elections in Johor.

This is after the former premier told voters that it was “haram” to vote for the Pakatan Harapan candidate.

The case was investigated by the police special task force on 3R, under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.

Muhyiddin later claimed that it was just a figure of speech and his remarks were taken out of context.

In July, police also opened an investigation paper against DAP chairperson Lim Guan Eng for a statement which allegedly touched on 3R. He later claimed that certain quarters had “twisted” his speech.

There have been no updates on this investigation as well.

So far, Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor is the sole high-profile figure to be hauled to court within a week of making a speech that touched on 3R.

He delivered the speech on July 11 and was charged under the Sedition Act on July 18. - Mkini
