MCA should never work with DAP, says outgoing youth chief

MCA should never work with DAP just because the two parties are now part of the coalition government, said outgoing MCA Youth chief Nicole Wong.

"MCA will not, does not want to, and cannot work with DAP. This is not MCA being petty, but because DAP has for the last 57 years consistently insulted MCA. Not just insults, but malicious curses, smears and defamation.

"We will not forget that DAP once wanted to exterminate MCA, to completely kill off MCA, and even made videos mourning the 'death of MCA'," Wong (above) said during her final speech as the party's youth chief at the MCA annual general meeting (AGM) today.

Wong said all these insults are 'vividly remembered', and if MCA worked with DAP in the current political scenario, it would be akin to MCA sacrificing its dignity for the sake of positions.

"We need to remember the sacrifices of our MCA predecessors who, in the past, sacrificed themselves for the Chinese community and country, only to face DAP's malicious curses.

“Even though DAP is in power today, they haven't forgotten their consistent approach, which is to continue attacking MCA.

"Our generation of MCA is the last line of defence, and we must figure out how to survive and be the messenger for MCA's rebirth. I reiterate, MCA can support the unity government for the stability of the country but cannot cooperate with DAP," she said.

She hoped that the MCA leadership would stand firm in its stance, or risk the Chinese community look down upon it.

Wong is stepping down as the MCA Youth chief as she exceeded the age limit. Johor exco member Ling Tian Soon will take over the helm.

MCA deputy president Mah Hang Soon

In an immediate response, MCA deputy president Mah Hang Soon agreed that the party does not need to "fully cooperate" with the DAP.

However, he believes the two parties can maintain a certain level of coordination and collaboration on specific issues.

"It’s not the right time, and there is currently no need to talk about full cooperation.

"If DAP agrees with MCA’s principles and struggles, we can maintain a certain level of coordination and collaboration on some issues to protect the rights of the Chinese community," he said when asked by reporters.

Ling and Wong were also present at the press conference but did not speak on the matter. - Mkini
