PAS calls for review of federal-state ties in its motion, among others

PAS MUKTAMAR | The 69th PAS Muktamar today has unanimously passed six motions, including to urge the government to establish a commission to review the distribution of powers between the federal government and state governments - as stipulated in the Federal Constitution drafted 60 years ago.

The motion was tabled by the party’s Women’s wing representative Siti Mastura Muhammad.

Through relevant motions, Siti Mastura said that too much power was vested in Putrajaya, which has caused many problems including leakages, abuse of power and failure to provide the best services to the people.

With immense power possessed by Putrajaya, she said, it caused blatant discrimination against states governed by parties that are not aligned with the federal administration.

“The commission’s membership must transcend state, party, race and religion. The federal and state governments must respect and comply with all the provisions of the Federal Constitution that are related to the distribution of power.

“The government also needs to balance the distribution of power seriously by giving more power to the states, not only to Sabah and Sarawak, but also to (other) states to meet people’s needs.

“There is also a need for a better relationship between the federal government and the states in various aspects of the implementation of the powers as stated in Schedule 9 of the Federal Constitution,” she said at the Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC) in Shah Alam, Selangor today.

Elaborating, Siti Mastura, who is also Kepala Batas MP, proposed that the government not practice double standards be it in terms of treatment to any states’ menteris besar or state civil servants in the distribution of allocations and development projects.

She also called for the abolishment of agencies or any statutory bodies established to transfer state development allocations meant for the state government.

The motion was then supported by a representative from Tumpat, Mumtaz Md Nawi, before it was unanimously passed by other representatives present.

The other five motions passed by the muktamar without debate were:

  • For PAS to be the main explanatory agent in the issue of global warming and climate change.

  • Drive the wave of youth support to Perikatan Nasional.

  • Defend and strengthen the position of Islamic laws and the Syariah Court.

  • To state that Palestinian matters are Muslims’ rights.

  • Defend media freedom as well as association, and political freedom.
