PAS MUKTAMAR | Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has rejected Titiwangsa MP Johari Abdul Ghani's suggestion that the government float the price of local white rice.
According to him, such an act would only cause low-income groups, especially rural residents, to no longer be able to buy the staple food.
"The price of local rice is RM2.60 per kg and even now, some are struggling to buy it.
"Not everyone has the ability, people from towns can buy... people from villages can't, and grocery stores usually sell by kilogrammes.
"So if it is floated, I’m afraid that more people will not be able to buy local rice anymore," Sanusi (above) said when met at the 69th PAS muktamar held at the Ideal Convention Center (IDCC) in Shah Alam, today.
Last Monday, Johari, when debating the Budget Supply Bill 2024 at Dewan Rakyat, proposed the idea due to a lack of supply of local white rice compared to the imported ones.
He said the significant price difference between the two caused a lesser supply of the local product in the market.
Meanwhile, Sanusi expressed appreciation to the government for increasing the base price of rice to RM1,300 per metric tonne during the tabling of Budget 2024.
"Thank you... up by RM100 but it's not enough. I hope it can be more than that. If it's RM1,700 (per metric tonne), what's wrong (with that)?" he asked. - Mkini
