Press freedom: Fahmi to appeal to speaker against confining media

Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil will appeal for Dewan Rakyat speaker Johari Abdul to allow media personnel to meet and interview MPs at the Parliament lobby.

This comes after the Parliament in a directive last week ordered all media activities to be confined within its media centre, which is a floor below the main lobby.

“While I may have my own personal views, (but) this is the speaker’s house, so we respect the decision.

“There are certain things that are just part of ruling in the house, so everyone has to abide by them.

“But I will talk to the speaker about this,” Fahmi told reporters at the Parliament earlier today.

On Sunday, the Parliament issued a directive that effectively bars MPs from holding press conferences and door-stop interviews other than inside the media centre.

For the record, the media centre is located on the ground floor of the Parliament’s main block, one floor below the lobby of Parliament’s main block.

It was a return to an old policy that started in 2017, when the Parliament, then under the administration of a different speaker, banned journalists from accessing the Parliament lobby where they can directly seek comments from ministers and MPs. - Mkini
