After Sirul's freedom, Azilah continues to wait for pardon in prison

Former police commando Azilah Hadri was transferred to Sungai Buloh prison last year, where he remains on death row after a 2006 conviction for the murder of Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu.

Utusan Malaysia reported that Azilah, 47, since the dismissal of his final appeal in 2020, continues to wait for a state pardon board's decision on whether his sentence will continue or he will be granted amnesty.

"He (Azilah) remains a death row prisoner in Sungai Buloh Prison since he was transferred there (from Kajang Prison)," said a source quoted by the Malay daily.

This comes after Azilah's co-accused, Sirul Azhar Umar, was released from Sydney's Villawood Detention Centre following a Nov 8 Australian High Court ruling against indefinite detention.

Utusan also reported that Sirul Azhar is likely to remain in Australia where his family, including his son Shukri Azam, is said to be residing in Canberra.

Altantuya, a Mongolian national, was murdered in October 2006 and her remains were blown up with military-grade explosives. A separate criminal court convicted Sirul and Azilah of the murder and sentenced them to death in April 2009.

Sirul had fled to Australia prior to the Federal Court upholding the duo's conviction and death sentence in 2015.

The criminal court also acquitted former political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda of abetting the murder without his defence being called in October 2008. - Mkini
