Bersatu associate wing chief faces calls to step down

 

Bersatu associate wing chairman Chong Fat Full said the wing should demonstrate to the public that party membership is not limited to Bumiputeras.

SHAH ALAM: Bersatu associate wing chairman Chong Fat Full faced calls to resign at the wing’s convention being held here tonight.

Several Bersatu associate wing members held up signs calling for Chong to take responsibility for the losses experienced by the wing’s candidates at the last general election and the six recent state elections.

As Chong was delivering his keynote address at the Ideal Convention Centre, one of the members shouted, “Chong Fat Full, resign.”

The signs they had brought were then confiscated by the convention’s secretariat.

Several people also exited the hall as soon as Chong finished speaking, in the incident which took place in front of Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin and Bersatu Supreme Council member Saifuddin Abdullah.

FMT attempted to speak to some of those who had urged Chong to resign, but they declined to comment.

During his speech, Chong said that since its establishment two years ago, the wing had been increasingly accepted by the non-Muslim community and had been able to hold its first convention this year.

He also reminded the delegates that Bersatu’s associate wing was not a platform to seek positions or contest elections.

Instead, he said the wing should showcase to the public that Bersatu’s membership is not limited to Bumiputeras. - FMT
