PETALING JAYA: The education ministry has responded to the 2022 Auditor-General’s Report on the “poor” progress of work on repairing dilapidated schools in the country, stating it had taken several measures to improve implementation.
In a statement issued today, the ministry said it has established steering and technical committees to coordinate implementation issues in carrying out these repairs.
It is also reporting the current status of these projects at Malaysia Madani Action Council meetings, Bernama reported the ministry as saying.
“The government’s proactive steps have shown positive results.
“As of November 2023, a total of 689 out of 996 dilapidated school building redevelopment projects have been fully completed.
“Another 120 projects are under construction, and the remaining 187 projects are in various pre-construction stages,” the ministry said.
The A-G’s Report had said the School Upgrading and Redevelopment Project was implemented in only 25.6% or 386 out of 1,505 schools nationwide identified as having dilapidated buildings.
A-G Wan Suraya Wan Radzi said the project had performed subpar, with only 123 (31.9%) of the 386 schools involved completed between 2019 and 2022.
The ministry, in a statement today, said among the early steps taken were expanding the project scope to include all buildings and facilities.
It is also using an impact score (on a scale of 1 to 7) to determine the priority list. Buildings or facilities rated at Scale 7 and Scale 6 will be attended to first.
“The Dilapidated School Construction Project is one of the initiatives of the special task force for public sector reform (STAR) to improve the implementation process of rebuilding dilapidated buildings in schools,” the statement said.
It said this year, STAR, chaired by Chief Secretary to the Government Zuki Ali, was established in line with the aspirations of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to enhance the productivity of the public sector. - FMT
