One year in power, PKR info chief calls congress 'surreal' affair

PKR CONGRESS | PKR information chief Fahmi Fadzil at the end of the party’s 17th congress today reflected on their journey to power in Putrajaya, where the annual gathering of delegates and leaders was also held for the first time.

Speaking to reporters, Fahmi described the two-day affair which concluded with PKR president Anwar Ibrahim’s winding-up speech, as one unlike past years held as the main opposition party.

“It is quite surreal… Like what was also mentioned by (PKR deputy president) Rafizi (Ramli), this congress is quite lavish when compared to how we used to do it.

"Certainly it is an experience that will help us to mature, and also a sobering experience.

“All the reminders from the top leaders, be it the secretary-general, deputy president and president, that just by being in Putrajaya is not tantamount to a victory with ‘loot’ to share,” he said.

On the contrary, the communications and digital minister said PKR delegates in their debates of Anwar’s policy speech had made clear the level of trust and responsibility placed on their leaders in government.

The PKR congress this year was held several days after Anwar’s coalition government marked its first year in power.

“And perhaps, that is the biggest victory not mentioned by political analysts or surveys, that this government is one which is the most stable,” he added.

Internally, Fahmi noted PKR must work towards resolving its own issues also raised by delegates, including ensuring inclusivity among all members, as well as maintaining a connection with its grassroots.

A total of 1,485 delegates from PKR divisions nationwide were in attendance at Putrajaya International Convention Centre, today, along with 1,770 observers. - Mkini
