DAP rep slams Perkasa's call to boycott Petronas over solar deal

A DAP leader has slammed the call by Perkasa for Malays to boycott Petronas petrol stations for one week to protest the firm’s decision to appoint a non-bumiputera company for a solar deal.

According to Astaka assemblyperson Jason Ng, the statement by the bumiputera rights NGO’s chief Syed Hasan Syed Ali not only reeked of racism but also went against the very basis of the country’s market, which practised fair, healthy competition.

“Perkasa’s ‘threat’ for Petronas to give at least 50 percent of its solar panel installation contract at its 300 outlets nationwide to Malay/bumiputera companies is based on racist sentiments and not on the ability of a company.

“Solarvest Energy Sdn Bhd, which was awarded the contract, is a listed company with proven expertise in the renewable energy sector. Their expertise has not only gained them contracts from Petronas but from Tenaga Nasional Berhad as well,” Ng (above) said in a statement today.

Perkasa’s “extreme and regressive” call could cause foreign investors to lose faith in the country, he added.

“Perkasa’s boycott call is a publicity-seeking move made for political mileage, similar to the boycott trend currently plaguing the country.

“I urge the government to take strict action against those who incite racial discord,” Ng said.

Yesterday, former Mara Corporation chairperson Akhramsyah Sanusi said that bumiputera players in the solar energy industry are justified for speaking out against Petronas’ decision.

He said Petronas had erred not because it ultimately awarded the deal to Solarvest Energy but because it did so in a closed tender in which none of the three companies invited to bid were bumiputera-owned.

Petronas CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz previously clarified that the company’s selection was based on merit.

According to him, Petronas reviewed bumiputera solar companies based on a list provided by the Solar Energy Development Authority but none met the requirements. - Mkini
