Use Sosma against detained Israeli man, Bersatu Youth tells cops

Bersatu Youth wing today suggested Bukit Aman utilise the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) against an Israeli national that it arrested on Wednesday.

In a statement, Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal also urged security forces to strengthen border control to prevent such incidents from recurring.

He said the man - who was found to have six pistols and 200 bullets in his possession - should be detained under Sosma's subsection 4(5) which allows a suspect to be held for up to 28 days.

"Such a lengthy detention period is critical for the police in gathering information from other agencies to complete its investigation, as this case involves our national security," Wan Ahmad Fayhsal said.

Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain told a press conference that the agency has arrested a 36-year-old Israeli national who entered Malaysia using a French passport.

Police seized six pistols and 200 bullets from a hotel room when they arrested the suspect on Wednesday. He was subsequently remanded.

According to Razarudin, the man told investigators that he came to Malaysia to "assassinate a fellow Israeli" over a family dispute.

Police, however, did not buy his story and had since tightened security measures including for the country’s dignitaries.

The Israeli national is currently being investigated under Section 12 of the Passport Act and Section 7 of the Firearms Act.

Earlier today, Berita Harian reported the police arrested a local couple on suspicion of supplying firearms to the suspect.

The couple, aged 42 and 40, respectively, were arrested by a team from the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department at a Ramadan bazaar in Kuala Selangor at 7.15pm yesterday.

Tighten border security

Meanwhile, Wan Ahmad Fayhsal also suggested authorities block Israeli nationals from entering the country using other foreign passports.

This, he said, could be done by looking at where a passport was issued and by checking against other countries' immigration databases.

"The country's border security should be tightened to prevent any individual who plans to carry out terrorism here from entering the country, like in the case of this suspect," the Machang MP added. - Mkini
