Police: Klang child 'abduction' a misunderstanding

The alleged kidnapping attempt of a child by two foreigners at a supermarket in Klang last Monday turned out to be a case of misunderstanding.

According to Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan, a study of the closed-circuit television camera recording showed that the 19-month-old girl, who had gone there with her mother and aunt, was having difficulty ascending a malfunctioned elevator.

"Coincidentally, two foreign men were near the victim and they lifted her, intending to help.

"However, this action was misunderstood by the victim's mother, who thought that her child was being abducted," the New Straits Times quoted Hussein (above) telling a press conference at the Selangor police contingent headquarters yesterday.

Checks revealed that the two foreigners were legally employed at a nearby factory, and frequently visited the supermarket to buy necessities.

Hussein added that the duo also did not try to flee when apprehended by the public.

"Nevertheless, we will complete the investigation papers and hand them over to the deputy public prosecutor for further action.

"I also advise the public not to casually hold other people's children, especially those not known to them, as it can lead to misunderstandings and panic," Hussein said.

Photos and videos of the incident had gone viral on social media, with the faces of the misunderstood foreigners being visible. - Mkini
