KUALA LUMPUR: The plantation and commodities ministry will collaborate with the science, technology and innovation ministry (Mosti) to promote various innovations, automations, and mechanisations in the country’s palm oil industry.

In a posting on X, plantation and commodities minister Johari Ghani said an agreement was reached following discussions with science, technology and innovation minister Chang Lih Kang yesterday regarding the technological advancements in palm oil harvesting.

“Therefore, we welcome Mosti, researchers, technology entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders in this ecosystem to innovate and adapt advanced technology to assist the Malaysian palm oil industry,” he said.

Meanwhile, in a Facebook post, Chang expressed Mosti’s commitment to offering suitable technology and innovation to address the challenges faced by Malaysia’s palm oil industry, particularly in harvesting.

He said the industry contributed significantly to the country’s economy, but faced a labour shortage. This led to an estimated loss of income ranging between RM20 billion and RM30 billion.

“I am confident that through close collaboration between Mosti and the plantation and commodities ministry, coupled with the support of all stakeholders, we can spearhead the development of technology that will enhance the efficiency and competitiveness of our country’s palm oil industry,” he said. - FMT
