The man who allegedly fired several shots at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on Sunday is believed to have acquired the gun specifically for use against his wife.
According to police, the 38-year-old suspect bought the semi-automatic pistol from a Thai man just a few days before he used it in the 1.15am incident.
Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said initial investigation revealed that the suspect had paid RM5,000 for the pistol.
“Investigators learned that the suspect had contacted the Thai national through a friend about two or three weeks before the shooting.
“We believe he met the seller and bought the gun two or three days before the incident,” he told Malaysiakini.
Hussein said police are still investigating whether the two had met in Kelantan or on the Thai side of the border.
Earlier today, Malay daily Kosmo! in its report quoted sources saying that the Glock 19 used in the shooting was a brand-new firearm.
Police believed that the gun had never been fired before the incident at KLIA, it said.
On Sunday, a man whom police later identified as Hafizul Hawari allegedly fired two shots towards his wife, who runs an umrah travel company, when she was at the KLIA arrival hall waiting for pilgrims to arrive from Saudi Arabia.
The shots, however, missed the woman but one bullet hit her personal protection officer, causing serious injuries.
After the shooting, Hafizul reportedly fled the airport and triggered a large manhunt.
He was captured in Kota Bharu, Kelantan at about 3pm on Monday, after being on the run for some 36 hours. - Mkini
