DAP leader unsurprised by MCA’s decision to not campaign for its candidate

DAP vice-chairman Teresa Kok claimed MCA also did not help out on the campaign trail during the Selangor state elections.

PETALING JAYA: DAP vice-chairman Teresa Kok said she was not surprised by MCA’s stand to not help her party campaign in the upcoming Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election, citing a similar stance taken by the Barisan Nasional component previously.

“Not surprised (by the decision not to lend DAP a hand), because MCA leaders made the same announcement in the previous by-elections,” Kok told FMT.

In 2023, MCA president Wee Ka Siong effectively closed the door on helping to campaign for candidates from DAP, its bitter rival for decades, saying the party made it “very clear that we would only campaign for Barisan Nasional candidates”.

He said other political parties were not obliged to help DAP during the state elections as DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook had said that his party won its elections on its own.

Kok, the Seputeh MP, also claimed that MCA did not help DAP on the campaign trail during the Selangor state elections.

Asked if DAP would accept any help from MCA if it was offered by the latter, Kok said: “It would be nice if they could.”

Last Friday, MCA announced its decision to not campaign for any non-BN candidate.

Earlier today, MCA president Wee Ka Siong asked why his party should help campaign for DAP in the by-election next month when the latter had bad-mouthed it.

On Monday, an MCA division leader had said it would be difficult to convince party grassroots to back a candidate from their traditional rival in the by-election due to the animosity that stemmed from DAP’s “demonising” of the BN component.

Pakatan Harapan is still in talks over the selection of a candidate for the May 11 Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.

The Selangor state assembly seat became vacant after three-term assemblyman Lee Kee Hiong of DAP died on March 21 following a battle with cancer.

The Election Commission has set May 11 as polling day, while nominations and early voting will be on April 27 and May 7, respectively.- FMT
