KOTA KINABALU: A total of 218 out of 338 projects to rebuild dilapidated schools in Sabah have been completed to date, education minister Fadhlina Sidek says.

She said a further 60 projects were currently underway and expected to be completed soon, while the remaining 60 projects were still in the planning stage.

“These improvement projects involve more than RM3 billion in funding. We hope that all our projects can be expedited to provide facilities for our children to study in a more conducive environment.

“The ministry is committed to ensuring that all education issues in Sabah are addressed, and we will enhance the quality of education here for the benefit of our children,” she told reporters after inspecting the SBJK Kota Kinabalu outreach programme at SK Sembulan here last night.

She said it was important to find more undocumented children here and provide them with the opportunity to enrol in SBJK Kota Kinabalu.

Fadhlina said education was the right of every child and that SBJK Kota Kinabalu, which was established in October last year, currently had eight students.

“SBJK focuses on children without documents, where one parent, guardian, or caregiver is a Malaysian citizen, and the child is not attending school.

“We want to provide educational opportunities for these children,” she said.

Fadhlina said SBJK Kota Kinabalu was a continuation of the initiative established in 2013 in Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur, which had proven successful in providing education opportunities for undocumented children. - FMT
