Govt, opposition should agree on redelineation formula, says Bersatu man

Indera Mahkota MP Saifuddin Abdullah urges against making seats predominantly Malay or mixed in redelineation exercises.

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu’s Saifuddin Abdullah has urged the government and opposition to agree on a formula for the redelineation of electoral boundaries, saying a specific political party had benefited from gerrymandering in the past.

Speaking at a forum organised by electoral watchdog Bersih last night, the former Umno MP however did not state the party in question.

He suggested that factors such as Malaysia’s multicultural make-up and the demographics of a locality be taken into consideration during redelineation exercises before decisions are made on whether to adjust the number of seats in a constituency.

“Let’s not intentionally make any seats predominantly Malay or mixed, as has happened before,” the Indera Mahkota MP added.

Saifuddin said there had been inconsistencies in the division of urban and rural seats which he attributed to a lack of such a formula.

“The Federal Constitution had stipulated conditions,” he said.

“It should be revisited. And if we need to amend it, we should, otherwise there is no formula.”

Election Commission chairman Abdul Ghani Salleh said in January that there were no plans to redelineate electoral boundaries for states in the peninsula and Sabah as the eight-year period for these was still ongoing.

He said the commission was considering the suitability of conducting a redelineation exercise for Sarawak. - FMT
