Govt to create agency to oversee points of entry, says Fahmi

 

Government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil said security at the nation’s points of entry remained a priority.

PETALING JAYA: The government will draft a new bill to enhance security at all entry points in the country, including establishing a coordinating agency, unity government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil said.

The home ministry will introduce a bill to establish a coordinating agency to control the country’s entry points. It will have legal authority to operate with sufficient power.

“This was discussed in today’s Cabinet meeting,” he said at a media conference in Putrajaya in response to the shooting at KLIA’s Terminal 1 on Sunday.

In the 1.30am incident, a man fired two shots at a woman, reportedly his wife. One round missed, while the other hit the woman’s bodyguard, who was taken to hospital.

“Security at the country’s entry points remains a priority, not only to prevent incidents like this but also to tackle issues like smuggling,” he said.

The 38-year-old suspect in the KLIA shooting has been remanded for seven days after he was arrested in Kota Bharu yesterday.

Police are investigating the case under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder and Section 8 of the Firearms Act (Heavier Penalty) 1971 for the unlawful possession of a firearm. - FMT
