PETALING JAYA: The state has lost a seasoned and exceptional leader with the passing of Joseph Kurup, says Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor.

“I would like to extend my deepest sympathies and sincere condolences to his family. He was an exceptional leader and made considerable contributions to our community, state and country.

“Joseph’s legacy is one of dedication and service, a true loss to us all,” he said.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also expressed his sadness at the news of Kurup’s death.

“His services and sacrifices during his time as a minister at both federal and state levels will surely be remembered by the people and the nation.”

Deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi remembered Kurup fondly as a Cabinet colleague.

“I hope his spirit continues to live on in our hearts. He was a friend who always fervently supported the party’s cause through thick and thin.

“His passing undoubtedly leaves behind a myriad of memories for me and fellow comrades,” Zahid said.

Kurup, the Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah founder, died today at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur. He was 79.

The former Sabah deputy chief minister retired from politics in January last year, having also served as a federal minister.

Kurup was also a founding member of Parti Bersatu Sabah before forming PBRS, a Barisan Nasional component, in 1994.

It is understood that he had been unwell for some time. - FMT
