SEPANG: The man involved in the recent shooting at KLIA Terminal 1 claimed trial to two charges, including one of attempted murder, at the sessions court here today.

Hafizul Hawari, 38, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before judge Azrol Abdullah.

He was accused of attempting to murder Farah Isa, 37, at the arrival hall of KLIA Terminal 1 at around 1.09am on April 14.

He was charged under Section 307 of the Penal Code with attempted murder, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and a fine, upon conviction.

The second charge pertains to the accused allegedly causing grievous hurt to Nur Hadith Zaini, 37, at the same location and time.

The second charge was framed under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years, a fine or caning, or any two of them.

Earlier during the proceedings, Hafizul’s lawyer, Naim Mahmud, applied for bail, saying the accused still cares for his wife and would do no harm to her or her family.

However, Selangor prosecution director Ku Hayati Ku Haron said the accused poses a flight risk, citing his arrest in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, and police findings indicating an attempted escape via the state border.

Judge Azrol rejected the bail application due to the gravity of the alleged offences after hearing arguments from both sides.

The court fixed June 11 for case mention.

Yesterday, Hafizul was slapped with seven charges, including possession of a firearm, at the Kota Bharu sessions court.

Among others, he was charged with possessing bullets, firecrackers, and the MyKads of three others, as well as using a fake vehicle registration number. He pleaded not guilty.

In the early morning incident on April 14, he allegedly fired two shots at his wife at the airport’s arrival hall but missed. One of the shots hit her bodyguard, who is being treated in hospital. - FMT
