PETALING JAYA: A Starbucks outlet in Tawau, Sabah, was vandalised this morning by two individuals who spray-painted the wall with the words “free Palestine”.

The US coffee chain had been among the brands that activists had called to be boycotted following Israel’s war in Gaza.

Tawau police chief Champin Piuh said the outlet’s supervisor discovered that the wall had been vandalised at about 8.30am, Harian Metro reported.

“The CCTV showed two individuals spray-painting the wall, but the footage was not clear,” he said, adding that the duo could not be identified.

Apart from “free Palestine”, the word “boikot” (boycott) was also spray-painted on the wall according to images making their rounds on social media.

In February, Starbucks Malaysia said misinformation had led to “acts of violence and vandalism” in some of its stores, and some of its employees had been assaulted.

Declaring that it had no political agenda, it said it “stood with humanity” and condemned the violence and loss of innocent lives in the Middle East.

Last month, Berjaya Corp Bhd founder Vincent Tan called on the public to stop boycotting Starbucks Malaysia, saying it only hurts the Malaysians running the company.

The business tycoon said up to 85% of Starbucks Malaysia’s employees are Muslims and that there are no foreigners working in the company’s head office. - FMT
