Suspect in KLIA shooting remanded for 7 days

Police have secured a seven-day remand order against a man suspected of firing shots towards his wife at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on April 14.

Magistrate Rais Imran Hamid granted the order when Hafizul Hawari was brought before him at the Kota Bharu Magistrate’s Court this morning.

Earlier, the 38-year-old arrived at the court complex at about 8.30am clad in purple lock-up attire and under heavy police guard.

National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer Nurul Atikah Abdul Karim represented Hafizul.

It was reported that the police arrested the suspect in Kota Bharu, Kelantan at about 3pm yesterday, after being on the run for some 36 hours.

Hafizul had allegedly fired two shots aimed at his wife, who runs an umrah travel company, when she was waiting for pilgrims to arrive from Saudi Arabia.

The shots however missed the woman but one bullet hit her personal protection officer, causing serious injuries.

After firing the shots, Hafizul reportedly fled the airport and triggered a large manhunt.

Police are expected to hold a press conference on the case at the Kelantan state police headquarters later today. - Mkini
