A contest featuring a group of janda (a divorced woman or widow) modelling clothing scheduled for April 21 at a karaoke centre near Taman Tasik Chatin in Mentakab, Pahang has been cancelled.
The organiser, known as “Uncle John”, announced this in a WhatsApp voice message last night.
He said the decision to call off the event was made after being advised by Temerloh MP Salamiah Mohd Nor.
“The Temerloh MP contacted me this evening and requested that the programme be cancelled as it could cause public discomfort.
“I admit my mistake as the organiser’s representative and apologise for this error,” he said.
It is understood that posters for the pageant have been circulated on WhatsApp since early yesterday.
Salamiah, in a post on her Facebook, said she had lodged an official objection with the Temerloh district religious office over the pageant.
“This objection was made because the openly promoted contest for immoral purposes had caused public discomfort,” she said.
It also violated Islamic laws and could invite various forms of slander, she added.
Salamiah hoped the district religious office would take stern action to ensure such a culture does not spread in the district.
