We’re safe, Anwar-backing MP says after Bersatu’s rule change approved

PETALING JAYA: A Bersatu MP who had last year backed Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government says there is no need for him to vacate his seat following the approval of an amendment to the party’s constitution.

Suhaili Abdul Rahman said the amended constitution only took effect on April 1, while he and five others had declared their support for Anwar between October and January.

“We’re safe,” the Labuan MP, who has since been suspended for six years, told FMT.

Earlier today, it was reported that the Registrar of Societies (RoS) had approved an amendment to Bersatu’s constitution which would allow the party to revoke its elected representatives’ membership if they go against the party’s stand.

In a Facebook post today, Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal shared a notice issued yesterday by RoS director-general Zulfikar Ahmad stating that the amendment had been approved and was effective from yesterday.

The decision to tweak its constitution was in response to the six Bersatu MPs pledging their support for Anwar’s leadership without leaving the party, enabling them to circumvent a provision in the Federal Constitution which would have required them to vacate their seats.

The other MPs who had backed Anwar were Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli) and Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar).

All six MPs justified their support for the federal government by citing the needs of their constituencies. However, they had said they would remain loyal to Bersatu.

Suhaili also vowed to take on Bersatu in court if the party decided to sack him.

“I will fight them no matter how long it takes. For now, my support remains for Anwar.”- FMT
