PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional secretary-general Zambry Abdul Kadir and DAP organising secretary Steven Sim have been tasked with coordinating the unity coalition’s campaign for the coming Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.

This was decided by the unity government leadership council at a meeting this evening.

Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, the head of the council’s secretariat, said the candidate for the May 11 polls would be decided by the top leadership of the unity government.

The by-election was called following the death of three-term assemblyman Lee Kee Hiong of DAP on March 21 after a battle with cancer.

Selangor Pakatan Harapan has said that DAP would defend the seat for the coalition.

Meanwhile, Asyraf said the council was concerned by certain quarters playing on public sentiment to the point of escalating racial and religious tensions, adding that this could threaten national harmony.

“The council agreed that the government should not compromise on extreme actions that can affect the nation’s stability and will take stern action according to the law,” he said.

The Umno secretary-general said the government would take a moderate approach when handling sensitive matters, while focusing on policy matters to safeguard the welfare of the rakyat.

This follows the controversy over the sale of socks bearing the word “Allah” by KK Mart. It began on March 13 when photographs of the socks at a KK Mart outlet in Bandar Sunway were circulated on social media.

This led to multiple police reports and Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh spearheading a campaign for a public boycott of KK Mart outlets.

KK Mart’s founder Chai Kee Kan and director Loh Siew Mui have claimed trial to intentionally wounding the religious feelings of Muslims by selling the socks.

However, the incident led to three KK Mart outlets, including one in Kuching, Sarawak, being subject to petrol bomb attacks. - FMT
