In a Bernama report, Johor police chief M Kumar said the five were charged in the Johor Bahru sessions court and the Kulai magistrates’ court under Section 3(1) of the Kidnapping Act 1961 and Section 383 of the Penal Code for extortion.
All pleaded not guilty.
Kumar said police initially arrested nine men at various locations in Johor, Negeri Sembilan and Selangor from May 23 to 25 after they were believed to have been involved in the case.
The other four suspects were released on bail to be prosecution witnesses.
Kumar said all of the nine men had criminal records, with urine tests also revealing that six of them tested positive for methamphetamine.
He said police also recovered a significant amount of money believed to have been paid to the suspects to secure the woman’s release.
It was reported that a 30-year-old woman was abducted on May 16 by three men armed with parangs from her home in Kulai before being released at a bus station in Skudai later that day.
The self-employed victim was unharmed and released after a ransom of RM111,000 was paid. - FMT
