Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman is set to run 200km from his constituency to Parliament in Kuala Lumpur as a sign of protest against the government for not giving constituency allocations for opposition lawmakers.
The former Muda president announced the initiative dubbed “Langkah Muar” in a short video posted on X last night.
“It’s been more than a year since constituencies held by opposition MPs received any allocation. Government MP constituencies received RM20 million but the opposition has gotten zero.
“The government asked to negotiate. I have met the deputy prime minister twice and written a letter two to three times but there have been no new developments. I cannot give up. Instead of complaining, I better act on it,” Syed Saddiq said.
The former youth and sports minister noted his previous fundraising initiatives, such as when he went bald to raise funds for his constituency, cooked lasagna and modelled a kurta for the same reason, and conducted an online class to raise funds to purchase tablets for students.
“This time, I will be using my legs to raise funds for Muar and as a sign of protest,” said Syed Saddiq.
Syed Saddiq is set to hold a press conference in Parliament this afternoon to talk about the opposition allocation issue but it is unclear if it will touch on “Langkah Muar”.
Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof previously confirmed meeting with opposition representatives in March to discuss allocation demands by the latter.
Fadillah, however, denied there was any draft document submitted or received during the meeting, as claimed by opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin.
Syed Saddiq last month sought a civil court order to overturn an alleged decision by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the government to cancel RM730,300 in allocations for his parliamentary constituency.
RM100k target
He told a press conference in Parliament that he is aiming to raise RM100,000 which will be channelled to his constituents through the establishment of a service centre, and food baskets.
The run will be live-streamed on his social media accounts to prevent allegations of cheating, he added.
He said he will share the details of the route he intends to take on the run, which will begin in Muar tomorrow at 6.30am.
He hopes for the run to end in front of Parliament on Monday morning before the Dewan Rakyat sitting commences.
“But the aim is for me to finish an ultramarathon every day,” he said, explaining that an ultramarathon entails distances of more than 52km.
