Dzulkefly's lawyer withdraws, hearing against Najib postponed

A lawyer has withdrawn from acting for Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad in a defamation suit against former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak over an allegation that the minister practised nepotism.

As a result, today's initially scheduled Kuala Lumpur High Court hearing of the civil action has been deferred to next year.

When contacted, counsel Sankara Nair confirmed his withdrawal, which resulted in the civil court vacating hearing dates initially set for today and the rest of this week.

However, Sankara (above) declined to comment on the reasons for his withdrawal from representing the Kuala Selangor MP.

Lawyer Muhammad Farhan Muhammad Shafee appeared for defendant Najib.

Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad

On Dec 31, 2021, Dzulkefly filed the defamation action against Najib over the latter’s Facebook post uploaded on Aug 24, 2020, which purportedly contained the allegation concerning the 2019 appointment of Dzulkefly's daughter Nurul Iman to the board of Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM).

Dzulkefly is suing over Sinar Harian articles published in January 2019 titled “Junaidah nafi dilantik pengerusi AIM kerana kronisme” (Junaidah denies AIM chair appointment due to cronyism) and “Kronisme AIM: Pelantikan anak menteri tiada kaitan dengan KKM” (AIM cronyism: Appointment of minister’s daughter nothing to do with MOH).

KKM is the Bahasa Malaysia acronym for the Health Ministry, while Junaidah referred to AIM's chairperson Junaidah Kiting.

Najib, in his statement of defence, claimed that his online social posting about the issue of cronyism was not referring to Dzulkefly. - Mkini
