Ministry 'weak' in handling opposition to DLP circular - Bersatu leader

The Education Ministry is “weak and helpless” in handling opposition to its latest circular on the Dual Language Programme (DLP), a Bersatu leader alleged.

According to the party’s information chief, Razali Idris, there is nothing wrong with the circular mandating at least one class must teach Science and Mathematics in Bahasa Malaysia if a school wishes to implement DLP.

He was commenting on opposition to the directive by 11 Chinese secondary schools in Penang that claimed there is no demand to learn Science and Mathematics in Bahasa Malaysia.

As such, the group urged the ministry to do away with the directive and maintain teaching the two subjects in English.

The group also claimed the directive ignored the will of the parents and went against the original intention of the DLP, which was to better equip students in science, technology, engineering, and math (Stem) fields.

“The act of the schools’ representatives seems to go against the Federal Constitution which clearly states the prestige of Bahasa Malaysia in the country.

“Is this not touching on 3R (race, religion, royalty) issues?” Razali asked in a statement today.

‘Don’t belittle national education system’

Elaborating, Razali lambasted parties who dared question the government’s policies which “surely benefits all”.

Commenting on a school representative’s remark that the directive has “resulted in confusion and psychologically affected the pupils”, he said the only confused party in this matter were those opposing it without realising Bahasa Malaysia is the language of unity.

“Do not belittle the national education system and don’t give room for others to bring up the education streaming system!” he said.

Meanwhile, Umno Youth Chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh also voiced his backing for the Education Ministry’s circular.

“Why so afraid of the use of Bahasa Malaysia as a medium in one class only?

“In this issue, I fully back the ministry’s policy. Bahasa Malaysia is our national language, full stop,” he said on Facebook.
