Muda questions Putrajaya's 'silence' on competitiveness ranking drop

Muda has questioned the government's "silence" on the country's seven spots fall in the 2024 International Institute for Management Development (IMD) World Competitiveness Ranking.

In a statement, the youth-based party urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim or his cabinet members to answer three pertinent questions regarding the matter.

"Do the prime minister and his cabinet ministers view this as a petty issue? It's been 24 hours (since the index release), and there has yet to be an official explanation from the government.

"If the prime minister cannot answer, Muda urges the minister in charge of the relevant portfolios to explain.

"Are the unity government leaders more focused on 'immature politics' such as campaigning for a by-election, or looking after the interests of six (Bersatu) turncoat MPs, rather than focusing on matters concerning the country?" Muda asked today.

Malaysia dropped to the 34th spot this year from the 27th position last year in this year’s IMD ranking, which is a comprehensive annual report and worldwide reference point on the competitiveness of countries.

Yesterday, Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin slammed Anwar over the matter, saying Malaysia’s poor performance is a great blow and should serve as a clarion call for the premier to quit being a “master spinner”.

For the first time, Malaysia ranks lower than Indonesia and Thailand in the index.

Immediate attention needed

Muda also questioned whether DAP chairperson Lim Guan Eng would issue a statement on the latest ranking, as he had done in 2022 during the Ismail Sabri Yaakob administration.

The Bagan MP had said Malaysia's fall to the 32nd spot in 2022 from the 25th position the year before in the 1MD ranking was a "clear warning" that Ismail Sabri's administration had failed.

Muda also wondered whether Lim's ally in the coalition government, Fahmi Fadzil, who is also the government spokesperson, would comment on the matter.

Muda pointed out that Malaysia experienced a decline in almost all factors assessed, including economic performance, government efficiency, and business efficiency.

"The only exception is in the field of infrastructure, where Malaysia maintained the same position.

"This decline requires immediate attention and action from the unity government to overcome the weaknesses that have been identified and restore Malaysia's position as a highly competitive country at the global level in the near future." - Mkini
