Muhyiddin 'thanks' PM for 3 sen egg price reduction

In response to the government’s move to reduce egg prices by three sen, former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin gave a tongue-in-cheek reply by “thanking” Putrajaya for it.

“I ‘thank’ the prime minister for reducing the price of eggs by three sen. He said this is part of the government’s move to return savings from the recent diesel subsidy rationalisation.

“Just that I thought the prime minister would be announcing a comprehensive mechanism to reduce prices of goods,” he said on Facebook.

Yesterday, the government announced a reduction in the retail prices of Grade A, B, and C eggs by three sen each across the country in line with efforts to pass on the savings from targeted subsidies to the people.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the new retail prices for Grade A, B, and C eggs are 42 sen, 40 sen and 38 sen each, respectively.

“The subsidy coverage for the people’s food needs of 10 sen per egg involves an expenditure of RM100 million, while the allocation for chicken egg subsidies in 2023 amounted to RM927 million,” he was reported as saying.

This came after the government decided to do away with the blanket subsidy of diesel prices on June 9, prompting backlash from several quarters.

On that note, Muhyiddin reminded the government that the blanket subsidy removal for diesel resulted in price hikes across many goods and services, including school bus fare.

“Perhaps, the government should have announced a comprehensive package worth RM4 billion to help the people - which is equivalent to the savings anticipated from the targeted subsidy measure.

“However, what was announced was the reduction in egg prices which will only cost the government about RM100 million, which was not what I expected,” the Pagoh MP added.
