PETALING JAYA: Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) has not ruled out the possibility of contesting the Sungai Bakap by-election to come, despite losing its deposit in the recent Kuala Kubu Baharu polls.
PRM president Ahmad Jufliz Faiza said its defeat in Kuala Kubu Baharu did not signal the end of its participation in elections as it still had a lot to contribute, not only to Penang but to the nation as well.
“This week, the top leadership will hold a meeting to make a final decision, and if we decide to contest the Sungai Bakap by-election, a candidate will be selected,” he told FMT.
“We are contesting because we believe PRM remains relevant. Since 1955, our struggles have not changed. We continue to oppose all forms of cronyism, capitalism and oppression.”
In the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election on May 11, Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Pang Sock Tao from DAP won with a 3,869-vote majority in a four-cornered fight.
Pang won 14,000 votes, defeating Perikatan Nasional candidate Khairul Azhari Saut of Bersatu who secured 10,131 votes. PRM’s Hafizah Zainuddin and independent candidate Nyau Ke Xin won 152 and 188 votes, respectively.
Jufliz said PRM had consistently contested various elections in Penang, fielding Tan Joon Long in Sungai Bakap in the 2018 general election.
“During the PRM congress two years ago, we decided that the party would contest 150 parliamentary seats, demonstrating our ambition and commitment to participating in elections,” he said.
In the 2018 general election, Tan only managed to secure 55 votes, and the Sungai Bakap state seat was won by PKR candidate Dr Amar Pritpal Abdullah.
The Sungai Bakap seat fell vacant following the death of PAS assemblyman, Nor Zamri Latiff, on May 24. The Election Commission has announced that the by-election will be held on July 6.
Zamri won the seat last August, defeating PH’s Nurhidayah Che Rose in a straight fight with a 1,563-vote majority. - FMT
