Reflect on 'F' score instead of mocking it, Muda tells govt

Putrajaya should reflect on the “F” score given by Bersih for dragging its feet on reforms, said Muda acting president Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz.

When Bersih gave the government an ‘F’ score on reforms, it should be taken with humility and lead to self-reflection on the government’s performance, she said.

“The score and remarks made by Bersih were not ill-intentioned but made after many deliberations, meetings and briefings with government representatives and civil society groups while waiting for reforms,” Amira (above) said in a statement.

On June 8, Bersih chairperson Muhammad Faisal Abdul Aziz gave Putrajaya an “F” for electoral reforms.

This was because, to date, the Anwar Ibrahim administration has not carried out any electoral reforms in the country.

“Sorry to say, but we have yet to see any electoral reforms. The government has failed to carry them out.

“So that’s my answer, an ‘F’,” Faisal was reported as saying.

Several leaders from the government criticised Bersih for it - with DAP central executive committee member Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali saying the government was working hard to implement reforms at various levels and it takes time to bear fruit.

“Bersih wants everything to be implemented at the snap of a finger, it’s unfair. Bersih submitted several demands in February but it’s only June now, so it’s unjustified to say that the prime minister and his cabinet aren’t committed to pursuing reforms.

“The cabinet is particularly working on separating the roles of the attorney-general and public prosecutor, which would be a key institutional reform for our country,” Free Malaysia Today reported him as saying today.

Umno supreme council member Razlan Rafii said that many of Bersih’s demands in the past had been fulfilled by the previous BN government, adding the NGO is no longer relevant.

Address Bersih’s concerns

Amira said it was unimaginable to see Pakatan Harapan dismissing Bersih’s view given that both were allies in pushing for reforms in the past.

As for Muda, the Puteri Wangsa state assemblyperson said her party would continue to champion civil societies’ fight for a better Malaysia.

“This is a fight for all Malaysians, regardless of race, religion, educational background or class.

“And I hope the government will properly address the score given by Bersih, reflect on their reform plans and translate them into serious actions,” she said. - Mkini
