PETALING JAYA: The supply of eggs remains stable and there has been no shortage since the government announced a reduction in retail prices.

Selangor farmer Brian Lim said the supply of eggs could be impacted if there is a surge in demand, because it is challenging for producers to increase supply quickly.

“We need time to meet high demand. If demand is high, there could be an impact,” he told FMT.

Lim said that, so far, the demand and supply of eggs remain stable.

“In my area, we can meet the needs of customers, especially our regular customers,” he said.

Meanwhile, Federation of Livestock Farmers Associations of Malaysia deputy president Lee Yoon Yeau said they were not expecting any issues because supplies were currently adequate.

“A shortage could occur if there are uncontrollable factors such as disease, bad weather, or a reduction in production,” he said.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced a three sen reduction in the retail prices of grade A, B, and C chicken eggs nationwide.

Anwar stated that this measure involves a subsidy of 10 sen per egg, amounting to an expenditure of RM100 million.

However, Mydin managing director Ameer Ali Mydin believes that the government should increase the supply of eggs rather than reduce retail prices.

Ameer said there had not been enough eggs in the market in recent months. - FMT
