SEPANG: Police have arrested a man caught slapping his wife at a shopping mall in a clip that was live-streamed on social media.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Norhizam Bahaman said the man was arrested outside a clinic in Kota Warisan at around 10am today.

"We will apply to have the suspect remanded tomorrow to help facilitate further investigations," he said when contacted today.

It was initially reported that police received a report from the woman's sister on the incident. She confirmed that the woman who was slapped was her 35-year-old sister. The man in the video, in his 50s, is the woman's husband.

In the 29-second video of the incident, said to have taken place at a mall in Kota Warisan, the woman can be seen leaving the complex before a man, holding a child's hand, walks towards her. He then slaps her in public before scolding her. The woman is then seen leaving the premises.

The case is being probed under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, which is punishable with a maximum one-year imprisonment term, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both upon conviction.

It is also being probed under Section 18 of the Domestic Violence Act, which relates to information on offences involving domestic violence.

Those with information on the matter are urged to contact investigating officer Assistant Superintendent Mahafiz Mat Lawi at 010-2396533. - NST
