Negotiations to allow Anwar Ibrahim (right) and Rafizi Ramli to keep their PKR posts without contest are part of democracy, said Anwar’s political secretary.

PETALING JAYA
The president and deputy president’s posts in PKR are not expected to be contested at the party’s elections scheduled for May.

This is aimed at ensuring Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and economy minister Rafizi Ramli retain their posts as president and deputy president, respectively, Utusan Malaysia reported.

Anwar’s political secretary, Shamsul Iskandar Akin, said discussions are under way to leave the top two posts uncontested.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a “2025 back to school” programme in Tambun, Perak, today, Shamsul confirmed that the elections for the central leadership council, and the women and youth wing leaders at the national level will be held on May 24 as planned.

The current office bearers have been serving in their positions since May 29, 2022.

Asked if the proposed no-contest rule for the top two posts might violate the party’s democratic principles, he said negotiations are part of democracy.

“Competition for the top posts is democratic. No competition is also democratic. When there is no contest, it means there has been some negotiation. And this negotiation process is also democratic,” he said.

Shamsul also said PKR is focussing on a more important agenda – serving the people as part of the ruling government and preparing for the next general election (GE16). - FMT
